Description

(Hand-made amulet by Isabella.)

"The picture showing above is my "reproduction" of an amulet found in a woman's grave in the cemetery of Szentes Nagyhegy, east Hungary. The original was a small, silver, book-like amulet depicting a cross up front which has never been opened, thus the contains will remain unknown to us. Luckily many more of these little "boxes" were found through time and we know now that they were meant for talismanic use. These boxes, which came in many shapes; some of them being square and others being round, were most of the time filled with devotional objects. Common objects were; a Paternoster (prayer), images of Saints, but also herbs and gems which were supposed to contain magical powers to ward of evil, or even the devil himself.
Next to this, these boxes were also used for carrying along objects collected from the holy places pilgrims visited, relics. This could be graveyard dirt from....."

The little box I made is filled with a tiny bundle of Saint James Wort, the Paternoster (The Lord's Prayer) and a small rock-crystal.

For those who are interested, the amulet will soon be available at my Etsy shop! (Here you can also read more on how the amulet was made.)

Very cool replica!!!

Hungary has had Jewish populations since early times, and many had converted to Christianity. Jewish, even Islamic practices had a much more impact in eastern europe than it did the west. (Some experts say Jews were in Hungary as early as 295.)

During the Crusades many of the Jews of Bohemia came to hungary, and many converted...importing some practices into the local Catholics.

The item is almost exactly used as it was by early Jews very similarly to the use of the Tefillin. (Just instead of a Torah verse, it's been made Catholic.)

The Paternoster had exceptional power to the Baltic and eastern Europeans. As it was a hotbed of Bogomil Christianity before the Church stamped them out.

To those practicing Bogomilism it was seen as a powerful..force with physical effects against evil. Even after their idiology was crushed, it may have had some influence as well.

I doubt in period herbs and gems would be used, I've never found that in any documented sources. More likely a small bone of a saint, some (ewww) hair of a saint, or cloth that touched a saint or his blood would be used for apotropaic use.

Similar items were carried by pilgrims before and after the crusades mostly of lead, but also bronze and occasionally copper. It's interesting and very folk Catholic, I really like it.
